Leading scientists highlight stem cell symposium. A cadre of North America’s leading stem cell scientists will land in Madison on Wednesday, April 15, for the fourth annual Wisconsin Stem Cell Symposium: Cancer, Stem Cells and Cancer Stem Cells.

Eight faculty have received Kellett Mid-Career Awards for their research.

Kellett Awards are given by the Graduate School and funded by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. They are given to faculty who are five to 20 years past their first promotion to a tenured position. Honorees receive a $60,000 flexible research fund.

Writing in the Oct. 3 issue of Science, a team of researchers reports that the pine beetle harnesses a second microorganism — a bacterium known as an actinomycete — to protect its fungus from the mite's competing one. What's more, the bacterium does so by wielding an antibiotic that is brand new to science.

The new Wisconsin project involves an interdisciplinary team that brings together researchers from chemistry, the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, the Genome Center of Wisconsin, the Morgridge Institute for Research, and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
